Continued efforts needed to fight antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in humans and animals

Salmonella and Campylobacter bacteria are increasingly resistant to commonly used antimicrobials in humans and animals, according to a report by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). However, combined resistance to critical antimicrobials for human medicine remains low. There has been an increase in Escherichia coli isolates from food-producing animals showing complete susceptibility or zero resistance to key antimicrobials. Collaboration across sectors is essential to tackle antimicrobial resistance.
